Brother Innovis A80 Review: Is This the Right Sewing Machine for Your Sewing or Quilting Journey?

Whether you’re brand new to sewing or ready to upgrade from a very basic machine, the Brother Innovis A80 is one that you’ll come across frequently.

So in this blog post I’m giving you an honest review of this lovely little machine and helping you decide whether it’s the right fit for your sewing or quilting adventures.

Watch the video below or scroll down for the written version.

Let’s dive in!

What Comes in the Brother Innovis A80 Box?

One of the reasons people love this machine is that it comes with a generous starter kit. Here’s what you’ll find:

- A variety of presser feet: including your standard foot, open-toe foot for decorative stitches, zipper foot, blind hem foot, and overcast foot.

Seven sewing machine presser feet and attachments arranged in a row on a white surface, including both metal and white plastic components, showcasing different types for various sewing tasks.

- A button-sewing foot: (to be honest, I still hand-sew my buttons!)

- Twin needle + extra spool holder: perfect if you fancy playing with twin-needle stitching.

- Three spool caps: using the right size really does matter. Check out this video here to tell you why.

- Four bobbins: one already in the machine.

- Screwdrivers & a punch tool: handy for maintenance and (in the case of the punch tool) for thicker materials.

- A cleaning brush: your machine will love you giving it a spruce up on a regular basis. Check out my guide to cleaning your machine here.

- Clip On Pattern guide: great for quick stitch look-ups.

- A full user manual plus a starter project booklet.

Tip: Keep the box! Brother machines come with a 3-year warranty, and if it ever needs to go back, it’ll need to travel in the original packaging.

Getting to Know the Innovis A80: Buttons, Stitches & Simple Control

One of the nicest things about the A80 is how un-intimidating it is for beginners.

Easy Stitch Selection

All the decorative stitches are printed on the front of the machine. Simply turn the dial to the stitch number you want, and the screen tells you:

- Which foot you need

- The default stitch length

- The default width

- No guesswork required!

Customising Your Stitch

With two little plus/minus buttons, you can adjust stitch width and length. Perfect when you want a longer quilting stitch or a narrower zig-zag.

Twin Needle Mode

Just press the twin-needle button and the machine automatically adjusts the stitch options, so you don’t accidentally break a needle.

Automatic Lock Stitch

My favourite button! Press this and the machine will secure the beginning and end of your seam neatly, no more backstitching and overshooting your fabric (yes, I’ve done that too).

Needle Up/Down

A must-have for quilters. Tap the button to control where the needle stops — brilliant for pivoting around corners.

Start/Stop Button

You can sew without a foot pedal if you prefer. I personally like my foot pedal, but it’s nice to have the choice if you like stitching in hands-only mode.

Why Beginners LOVE the A80’s Threading System

Let me say this clearly:

The needle threader on this machine is 😘

No faffing, no threading channels, no needing three hands. Just:

1.   Bring the thread down the normal path

2.   Slip it into the guide

3.   Press the lever on the left hand side of the machine

4.   Pull the little loop through

That’s it — you’re threaded!

A Quick Word on the Bobbin (Spoiler: It’s a Dream)

If you’ve ever battled with a side-loading bobbin, this will feel like magic.

The Brother A80 has a top-loading, drop-in bobbin:

1. Drop the bobbin in

2. Follow the little banana shaped path

3. Let the built-in cutter snip the end

4. Pop the lid back on

No need to pull up the thread manually — just start to sew.

Sewing a Test Line: Smooth & Quiet

When stitching, the A80 feels steady and easy to control. The speed slider gives you plenty of flexibility: slow and steady for beginners, faster once you gain confidence.

And yes… the automatic lock stitch at the end is a joy every single time!

Lighting & Visibility

Here’s the honest bit:

The lighting is good over the needle,

But the lighting in the throat space isn’t the brightest.

If you sew mostly during the day, you’ll be fine.

If you sew evenings — like many of my customers do — you might want a little stick-on LED strip or a desk lamp for extra brightness.

The A80 Throat Space: Is It Big Enough for Quilting?

The throat space is 5 inches — quite small.

A sewing machine with a clear quilting ruler placed under the needle; a green arrow and text indicate a 5 inch measurement from the needle area to the machines side.

Here’s what that means:

It’s perfect for:

Dressmaking

Cushions & small makes

Tote bags

Table runners

Small beginner quilt projects

Tricky for:

Full-size bed quilts

Heavily quilted projects

Anything that needs to be rolled up through the throat

You can add an extension table to give yourself more surface area, but it doesn’t increase the throat space itself.

If you’re planning to make large quilts regularly, you’ll want a machine with a larger workspace.

But for beginners and everyday sewists?

This machine is just right.

So… Who Is the Brother Innovis A80 Best For?

✅ This is a brilliant machine if:

- You’re a beginner who wants something easy and frustration-free

- You’re moving up from a very basic machine

- You enjoy small-to-medium-sized quilt projects

- You love neat, modern features like automatic threading and lock stitch

- You want a machine that grows gently with your skills

❌ It’s less ideal if:

- You’re ready to tackle large bed quilts

- You need lots of throat space for free-motion quilting

- You prefer machines with multiple built-in lights and a larger sewing bed

👌 Overall, the A80 is a reliable, friendly, and confidence-building machine, ideal if you are just starting or rediscovering sewing or patchwork.

Final Thoughts

If you’re choosing your first “proper” sewing machine, the Brother Innovis A80 is one I can happily recommend. It’s sturdy, intuitive, beautifully designed for beginners, and has just enough features to keep you excited as your skills grow.
