Is the Brother A150 the Right Sewing Machine for You? My Honest Review

Is the Brother A150 the Right Sewing Machine for You?

A white Brother Innovis A150 sewing machine is placed on an orange background with Brother Innovis A150: Is This a Good Sewing Machine? above it. A colorful circular logo appears in the bottom left corner.

I’ve been using the Brother A150 for a few years now. Whilst it’s not my main machine, the Brother A150 has helped me stitch up dozens of tutorials, demo all sorts of projects on camera, and it doubles up a teaching machine to help my beginner sewers and new quilters on their journey.

So, you’d expect me to say that it’s perfect, right?

Not quite.

But it IS a good machine.

Let me explain...

What I Love About the Brother A150

The Brother A150 is a computerised sewing machine that’s packed with features but still wonderfully beginner-friendly. It has a bright LCD screen, 150 built-in stitches (which is where the name comes from), and even lettering options for stitching custom quilt labels.

Some of my personal highlights:

• One-click needle threader - this is unique to Brother; once tried, you'll never go back!

• Top-loading bobbin – easy to drop in and go (even my children students pick it up fast).

• Automatic thread cutter and lock stitch – press a button and done.

• Memory function – save your favourite stitch settings or stitch phrases like “Made with Love 💕”.

“The one-click needle threader is a game-changer. I’ll never go back!”

What About the Presser Feet?

The A150 comes with a good range of presser feet: standard, open toe, overcasting, blind hem, zipper and button options. But if you’re planning to quilt, you’ll probably want to add a walking foot and a free motion foot. You can get those in the Brother Quilting Kit made for this model.

💡TIP: Even if you’re not quilting, a walking foot is a brilliant help for tricky seams and layered fabrics.

Is It Good for Quilting?

The short answer? Yes… and no.

✅ Great for piecing and block work, as well as for Quilt As You Go (QAYG) projects; it’s accurate and reliable

✅ It’s lovely to use for applique and decorative stitching

However:

❌ It’s not ideal for large quilts – the throat space is snug and you won’t fit a big quilt in there

❌ Free motion quilting is possible, but a bit slow which makes the FMQ stitches too large and the FMQ stitch line a bit jumpy.

If you’re sticking to table runners, small quilts, or you're just starting out, you’ll probably love it. But if you’re aiming for big quilts or dense free motion work, you might outgrow it quite fast. It’s a good machine to take to classes though as it’s light enough to carry.

Who Is the Brother A150 Best For?

• Dressmakers – just add a concealed zipper foot

• Home sewists – brilliant for cushions, bags, and curtains

• Beginner quilters – especially block-based or sampler projects

• Label lovers – built-in fonts let you add names, dates or messages

Who Might Need Something More?

• Anyone planning to quilt full-size quilts regularly

• Serious free motion quilting fans

• Quilters who want all the feet included from the start

Final Thoughts

If you’re a beginner, or a general sewer/sewist who wants to get started with walking foot quilting, the Brother A150 is a fantastic mid-range machine. It’s the one I use on camera for a reason: it's reliable, intuitive, and easy to use.

That said, if your main love is quilting, especially large or free motioned quilts, I’d recommend a machine with more throat space and a bit more power. Something like the Brother F420, Brother Inovis 1100, 1300 or 1800Q might be worth a look.

I do hope that helps.

Happy machine-buying!
